Reminder: World Oil Chokepoints Remain Vulnerable
Published January 4, 2009

In the first few days of 2008, the price of oil passed $100 a barrel on its way to a high of $147—resulting in record prices at the pumps and a feverish demand for smaller fuel-efficient cars such as hybrids. The global downturn in the economy in the second half of the year simultaneously cut oil prices by $100, and sliced interest in hybrids and other energy-saving alternatives. In a case of déjà vu, oil prices climbed 23 percent last week, the first few days of 2009.
While most forecasters are expecting oil to remain in the $50 to $60 range for 2009, the world’s oil supply is no less vulnerable—and perhaps even more susceptible—to geopolitical forces than it was before the financial meltdown. Last week’s upturn in oil prices were attributed to Israeli attacks in Gaza, a natural gas dispute between Russia and Ukraine, and OPEC’s announced production cuts.
Vulnerabilities are most prevalent in the world’s six major oil transit chokepoints—where the threat of terrorist attack, theft from pirates, political unrest, and shipping accidents post real dangers. More than 40 billion barrels of oil are shipped every day along these narrow channels. A single incident in one of these locations could immediately wake American consumers up from the current lull in prices—and disrupt a sense of complacency about the real costs of filling up our cars and trucks.

Strait of Hormuz

The Strait of Hormuz is by far the world’s most important chokepoint with an oil flow of 16 to 17 million barrels per day—roughly 20 percent of oil traded worldwide. At its narrowest point the Strait is 21 miles wide, and the shipping lanes consist of two-mile wide channels. The majority of oil exported through the Strait of Hormuz travels to Asia, the United States and Western Europe. On average, 15 crude oil tankers passed through the Strait of Hormuz every day.
The Strait of Malacca

The Strait of Malacca

, linking the Indian and Pacific Oceans, is the shortest sea route between the Middle East and growing Asian markets. At its narrowest point, Malacca is only 1.7 miles wide creating a natural bottleneck, as well as potential for collisions, grounding, or oil spills. Recent reports by the International Chamber of Commerce show that piracy, including attempted theft and hijackings, are a constant threat to tankers in the Strait of Malacca.

The Suez Canal

The Suez Canal is located in Egypt, and connects the Red Sea and Gulf of Suez with the Mediterranean Sea. Oil shipments from the Persian Gulf travel through the Canal primarily to European ports, but also to the United States. More than 3,000 oil tankers pass through the Suez Canal annually. Rampant piracy off Somalia's coast have recently hit revenues at the Suez Canal. Shippers are avoiding the canal following the capture by Somali pirates of a Saudi Arabian supertanker loaded with $100 million worth of oil in November 2008.
The Strait of Bab el-Mandab

The Strait of Bab el-Mandab

is a chokepoint between the horn of Africa and the Middle East, and a strategic link between the Mediterranean Sea and Indian Ocean. It is located between Yemen, Djibouti, and Eritrea, and connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea. In 2006, an estimated 3.3 million barrels per day flowed through this waterway toward Europe, the United States, and Asia. Bab el-Mandab is 18 miles wide at its narrowest point, with two 2-mile-wide channels for inbound and outbound shipments. Bab el-Mandeb was the site for of a naval blockade of Israel by Egypt in the 1973 Yom Kippur War.
The Turkish Straits

The Bosporus Straits

one of the busiest and most dangerous chokepoints in the world. The 17-mile long waterway located in Turkey supplies Western and Southern Europe with oil from the Caspian Sea Region. In 2006, an estimated 2.4 million barrels per day of mostly crude oil flowed southbound through this passageway. Only half a mile wide at its narrowest point, the Turkish Straits are one of the world's most difficult waterways to navigate due to its sinuous geography. With 50,000 vessels, including 5,500 oil tankers, passing through the straits annually it is also one of the world’s busiest oil routes.

The Panama Canal

The Panama Canal is an important route connecting the Pacific Ocean with the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. A half-million barrels per day of crude and petroleum products were transported through the canal in 2006. The Canal is 50 miles long, and only 110 feet wide at its narrowest point, called the Culebra Cut. The Panama Canal is not a significant route for US petroleum imports, but like all important thoroughfares, closure of the Panama Canal would greatly increase transit times and costs adding over 8,000 miles of travel

AP Oil tumbles below $130; natural gas falls sharplyThursday July 17, 3:06 pm ET By Adam Schreck, AP Business Writer
Oil tumbles for third day in a row; natural gas dives by biggest amount in nearly a year
NEW YORK (AP) -- Oil prices fell below $130 a barrel for the first time in more than a month Thursday, as a dramatic slide entered a third day along with a sharp sell-off in natural gas.
The declines accelerated amid growing concerns about the weakening U.S. economy.

"The entire buillish scenario ... is starting to crack," said James Cordier, president of Tampa, Fla.-based trading firms Liberty Trading Group and OptionSellers.com.
Light, sweet crude for August delivery dropped $5.31 to settle at $129.29 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Prices have fallen more than $15 in just the past three days.
Natural gas futures for August delivery fell more than 8 percent Thursday, marking their biggest one-day drop in nearly a year, according to Nathan Golz, researcher at Wachovia Securities in St. Louis. Prices for the key heating, cooking and power generation fuel have tumbled more than 20 percent since their peak before the Fourth of July, and are now trading at their lowest point since April.
A number of market observers say there was nothing supporting the run up in natural gas prices, which peaked in early July, and that this week's sell-off of oil has only helped speed the declines.
"Any time oil goes up or down on Nymex, it's going to have a carry-over effect on natural gas," said Michael Rieke, senior managing editor for power and gas at energy research firm Platts.
The immediate cause of Thursday's sharp natural gas decline was a larger-than-expected build of U.S. supplies.
The Energy Department's Energy Information Administration said in its weekly report that natural gas inventories held in underground storage in the lower 48 states rose by 104 billion cubic feet to more 2.31 trillion last week. Analysts had been expecting supplies to grow by only 86 billion to 91 billion cubic feet, according to a Platts survey.
Oil prices fell more than $10 over the previous two days on growing concerns that inflation and other economic concerns could reduce demand for crude. A surprisingly large gain in oil and refined fuel inventories in the U.S. prolonged the sell-off, because it suggested more supplies were heading into storage rather than consumers' fuel tanks.
Reports of a pre-dawn explosion that damaged an oil pipeline in Nigeria's restive south -- the sort of threat to supply that has helped fuel crude's recent rally -- did little to prop up prices Thursday.
A Nigerian military official said the blast on a pipeline owned by Agip, a subsidiary of the Italian energy giant Eni SpA, "affected output," although he did not say by how much.
Col. Chris Musa, head of the Bayelsa State military, also did not say how severe the damage was, and declined to comment on what might have caused the explosion or whether it had resulted in any casualties.
The company said a sudden drop in pressure led it to halt production on pipelines carrying 47,000 gallons of oil a day.
Attacks on oil industry infrastructure in the past two years have slashed oil output by almost a quarter in Nigeria, Africa's top crude producer.
At the gas pump, prices held steady at a record $4.114 a gallon, according to auto club AAA, the Oil Price Information Service and Wright Express. Diesel rose to a new record of $4.845, up more than half a penny.
In other Nymex trade, heating oil fell 6.62 cents to $3.7748 a gallon, while gasoline futures gained slipped fell 9.92 cents to $3.1802.
Brent crude for September delivery fell 51 to $135.30 on the ICE Futures Exchange in London.

Word that a U.S. ship had fired on the boats in the Persian Gulf raised concerns that a conflict between U.S. and Iranian forces could cut oil supplies from the region. Light, sweet crude for June delivery jumped as high as $119.50 on the news before retreating to trade up $2.70 at $118.76 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
Prices were already up before the report on news of a pipeline attack in Nigeria and a looming refinery strike in Scotland.
In Nigeria, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, or MEND, said its fighters hit an oil pipeline late Thursday, the fourth conduit the group has attacked in the past week. MEND said the pipeline belongs to a Royal Dutch Shell PLC joint venture. A Shell spokesman confirmed one of its pipelines had been hit, but provided no additional details.
MEND is the main militant group behind a series of recent attacks in Nigeria's southern oil region. Earlier this week, Shell said an earlier attack cut its Nigerian oil production by about 170,000 barrels a day.
Separately, workers at an ExxonMobil Corp. joint venture in Nigeria said they were cutting production by an unspecified amount to demand more pay. Officials said the facility, which typically produces about 2 million barrels a day in crude, was operating at "partial production."
Adding to the supply concerns, BP PLC said it is considering shutting down a 700,000 barrel-a-day pipeline system that carries oil from the North Sea to refineries in the U.K. if workers at Scotland's Grangemouth refinery carry out a threat to strike beginning Sunday.
The refinery supplies power and steam to the pipeline; if it shuts down, the pipeline can't operate, said Jim Ritterbusch, president of Ritterbusch and Associates in Galena, Ill.
Oil's rise came as the dollar strengthened. A stronger dollar typically encourages selling by making commodities such as oil less effective hedges against inflation, and by making oil more expensive to overseas investors. Analysts say the dollar's steady decline over the past year is the chief culprit behind this year's rapid rise in oil prices.
But, Ritterbusch notes, "that connection between oil and the dollar can be broken easily by supply issues," which drove trading on Friday.
At the pump, meanwhile, gas prices rose another 2.1 cents Friday to a record national average of $3.577 a gallon, according to AAA and the Oil Price Information Service. Gas prices have been following oil futures higher, but are also rising due to concerns about whether gasoline supplies are adequate to meet peak summer driving demand.
Analysts expect gas prices to continue rising for at least another month; predictions of how high prices will rise range from $3.70 to $4 a gallon. To a large extent, how high gas prices peak depends on what oil does.
Lately, analysts have recently raised their oil price predictions to $125 to $130 a barrel. Earlier this week, the expiring May crude contract rose as high as $119.90 as investors scrambled to square positions.
However, the Federal Reserve is expected to cut interest rates less sharply next week than originally thought. Because rate cuts tend to weaken the dollar, a smaller than expected cut could push the dollar higher, and send oil prices down.
"The current thinking is that the U.S. dollar may be bottoming out," said Victor Shum, an energy analyst with Purvin & Gertz in Singapore.
In other Nymex trading Friday, May gasoline futures rose 4.04 cents to $3.059 a gallon after earlier rising to a new trading record of $3.0815, and May heating oil futures rose 5.37 cents to $3.3121 a gallon. May natural gas futures rose 13.5 cents to $10.925 per 1,000 cubic feet.
In London, Brent crude futures rose $2.80 to $117.14 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange. ------
